Fortinet has released a new SD-WAN appliance called FortiGate Rugged 70G with 5G Dual Modem. This compact device is specifically designed for operational technology environments and offers advanced security features such as secure boot, biometric verification, and a next-generation firewall. The appliance also supports software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) and zero-trust network access with 5G connectivity.
The FortiGate Rugged 70G utilizes Fortinet’s security processing unit (SP5), which outperforms standard off-the-shelf processors in encryption, firewall performance, SSL inspection, and energy efficiency. The device consumes 88% less power than other processors, making it energy-efficient and sustainable for industrial environments.
Fortinet’s decision to develop its own silicon has been a key differentiator for the company. By making its own chips, Fortinet can design silicon optimized specifically for security tasks, delivering consistent features across all its products. The FortiGate Rugged 70G has found unexpected use cases in the banking sector, with one large U.S. bank adopting the appliance to manage traffic across its extensive network of remote automated teller machines.
The appliance’s comprehensive feature set, including its energy efficiency, durability, and centralized control, make it an ideal solution for secure and reliable network connectivity in challenging environments.
