Microsoft, OpenAI team up to invest half a billion in Future

January 31, 2024

Microsoft and OpenAI are planning to invest $500 million in AI robotics startup Figure AI, in a funding round that would value the company at almost $2 billion. Microsoft is reportedly looking to invest around $95 million, while OpenAI is considering a $5 million investment. The funding round is not yet complete, so the investment amounts may change. Figure AI recently partnered with BMW to deploy its autonomous robots in the automaker’s US facility, positioning its technology as a rival to Tesla’s robots. The startup’s humanoid robot stands 5’6″ tall, weighs 60 kilograms, and can carry a payload one-third of its weight. CEO Brett Adcock says that increased automation is necessary to address labor shortages and the need for productivity in the face of an aging population. If the OpenAI-Microsoft deal is finalized, Figure AI’s valuation could reach approximately $1.9 billion.
